Our Story
Billion Steps Foundation is a national level non-profit organisation, formally registered in 2019 under Section 8 of the companies Act. We work with children in need of care, protection and educational support across different geographies. We work with children of the migrant slum dwelling communities in cities and children from disadvantaged families in villages. Our special focus is on educating and child rights protection of the girl children in all ages. Our work is present in around 50 villages spread across 5 States, Rajasthan, MP, Odisha, UP and Haryana and slum areas of Delhi.

The Issues
“Early childhood is a significant period which sets the base for later learning and development. Recently, an all-India educational survey conducted by the NCERT and NUEPA indicates that the quality of ECCE is at risk especially the education component for the age group of three to six years”.
“In school environment, the dilapidated structures, single-room schools, lack of drinking water facilities, separate toilets and other educational infrastructure are grave problems. In rural areas generally education support services are hard to find leaving children with no or minimal after-school support, especially if the parents and families are not equipped to do so”.
"2003 NIEPA study titled Learning Achievements of Slum Children in Delhi indicated the hardships and risks faced by children in the slum areas of Delhi. It was difficult to bring these children to school, pressure of earning drive them to street-connected-life, forced labour, exploitation by unscrupulous elements and a cycle of abuse, exploitation”.
“A 2024 article by Dr. Kiran Modi & Ms. Gurneet Kalra of Udayan Care. says that factors like poverty, crises and other such issues, reduce capacity of a family to care for children, making them vulnerable to child protection risks such as abuse, exploitation, neglect and separation from the family, often having life long negative impacts.

A family’s inability to take care of their children; provide them education, healthy living and safety, is reflected in life long struggles for the children, families and communities and often mirrored in socio-economic inequalities, violations of rights, and barriers to national goals of prosperity and development. Child rights violations/neglect are most glaringly visible in our urban slums and disadvantaged villages.
While, we worry about what a child will become tomorrow. We need to be mindful that the “tomorrow” for that child is “today”. Step by step, the seeds grow until a billion steps transform the country and the world.
Billion Steps Foundation reaches out to children in urban slums & villages across many States. More than 10000 children and families are looking for you to empower them in their education and care.
